Today is THE DAY!

Today is the day! In less than two hours we will mee to do the walk through with the owner of the apartment and then we will receive our keys and access to our new apartment!!!

It's been a long wait and we are soooooo excited to finally get things going.

Tomorrow at 8AM (Thursday), the moving company will show up with a crane/lift type apparatus to transport our boxes to the living room window from the outside of the house. Since we are on the 4th/top floor this will save much time. :-)

I will post pictures as soon as I have a chance to return to the hotel and download them onto our laptop.

Hope all is well, many cheerful greetings from a rainy Munich today!

Best,
Ines

Glorious Ash Wednesday!

Dear Friends!

It was a BEAUTIFUL day today with temps close to 60 degrees! I spend a few hours strolling across the markets of old town Munich. I wandered past the Hofbraeuhaus and discovered many little restaurants and stores.
The markets were filled with people enjoying the warm weather and a beer or two along with a "Rollmops" (A herring on a bun). I don't know where all the people came from, but they all seemed to enjoy the beautiful day as much as I did.
Hope you all had beautiful day wherever you might be.

Enjoy the pics, and maybe they will make you come visit. :-)

Cheers, Ines

A few pics from the neighborhood!

Since I don't have many new pics from the house, I though I would post a few pics from our current neigborhood: As you can see the "Schneegloeckchen" - Snowbells in English- are in full bloom and especially since there is no snow, they provide a little "white" at this time of the year. The other picture was taken near our hotel. There are numerous streets that are lined with beautiful, turn of the century houses. They remind me a bit of a British neighborhood! Last but not least, a picture of our future bedroom. There are two parts to it and this one will be the sleeping side. The opposite side will be mainly our dressing room. :-)

Alright, once the move get's under way, I'm sure I'll have a few, eh... how can I say.. - more entertaining- pics to post.
Stay tuned!!!

Cheers, Ines

Only 10 more days!

10 more days to what you might ask??? Well, it's finally not a distant dream anymore: Our New Apartment!!
It seems time is creeping by at snails speed. Carlo and I can't wait until we finally have keys in hand and the moving truck with our furniture and things outside the new house. Today I ran a few errands in the neighborhood and was able to talk with the "hausmeister" (The super) to clear up an issue of who will paint the kitchen, living room and all other rooms on the first floor. Apparently the previous renter has hired someone to do the job, yet it's not done yet. We hope that everything will go smoothly and we can indeed move into a clean and finished place. Most likely, we will stay at the hotel for a few more days until we will have unpacked and washed a few things... This past Saturday, Carlo and I set out across town to buy a washer and dryer. So we did. Due to both of us suffering from backpain, sciatia at its best, we turned for home shortly after our purchases and spent a quiet evening at home. I think once we are settled our daily routine will improve. Carlo's schedule has been taking him all over Europe and tomorrow he will again fly to Zurich, then to Geneva, and London. He will be home by Friday evening, which will be the end of the long travelling weeks, I hope!

All around us Carneval is in full swing and I hope you will have a fun Fat Tuesday!!!

Cheers, Greetings to all!!!

Ciao, Ines

Our new apartment!!!!

Dear friends,

finally, finally a few long awaited snapshots of our new place! It is currently still being used by the previous tenants (re: bottles in kitchen = No, we did not have a housewarming party without you!) Also, the remodeling work is still under way, which explains all the dirt and unfinished walls. :-) It will be a wonderful place for us though once we will move in. Carlo and I are thrilled to have found this place just in the nick of time.

It is a wonderful sunny day in Munich today and I hope you will have an equally glorious day wherever you are.
Without further comments...here are the pics:

Almost there!

Hello dear Friends!

Boy, it's Monday morning and raining again!!! The weather here in Munich is just not cooperating. The sunny days of California seem so surreal! Everything seems more bearable though since we found an apartment! I will go tomorrow and sign the contract, Carlo has already signed it since he will be traveling all week. We are VERY excited. Leaving the hotel will be a glorious moment as it is getting really OLD. Having a real kitchen again and enough space for our clothes will be wonderful–along with the fact that the cleaning service will not wake me twice a week. :-) No really, it'll be nice to use our own washer and having our own sheets and towels.

More details on the apartment .... to come tomorrow.

The weekend was a bit overshadowed because Carlo had another pinched nerve in his back. We were about to leave the house on Saturday when he realized he had trouble walking. We stayed home for the rest of the weekend and I was taking care of him the best I could. Stretching, muscle relaxers, ibuprofen, ice and streching...
If we would have been able to go downtown we might have seen politicians like Vladimir Putin, or several ministers of defense, as many of them came together in Munich for the defense and security forum.

Today, Carlo is back at work and has a daunting week ahead of him: trips to Rome, Frankfurt, Zurich, Geneva. He will be travelling all week. I worry about his back, yet equipped with drugs, ice packs and elastic bands for stretching he could be mistaken for a man with fantasies! If you know what I mean! :-)

Tonight one of my good girlfriends will spend the night here at the hotel, as she has an appointment here in Munich on Tuesday morning. It'll be great to see her and have some company.

My dad will visit on Wednesday and I'm sure we will have a look at our new apartment together.
Again, I will report a bit more tomorrow. :-)

All the best, until tomorrow!!

Cheers,
Ines

Snow again! Home found?

After the past few days of seasonably warm weather, the snow is back! It has been a constant up and down with the temps here.
The biggest news though is a potential new home for us. On Sunday we visited an apartment that we just loved! It is still under construction as it was completely remodeled, but will be finished by the end of the month. It has two stories and enough space for us not to go crazy. :-)

We will see it again tomorrow and will hopefully sign a contract very soon.

Keep your figers crossed!!! (We are sooo ready to settle down and move out of the hotel!)

Cheers, Ines

I finally figured out how to post pictures! :-)
Now I will upload a few from our latest big snow... It is very winterlike, yet most of the snow has already disappeared.

The 1972 Olympic Park-from above&below

Hello all!
So much has happened and I have not been good about keeping up with my emails. This is an attempt to make a dent into the back log of our experiences. Here, we had a town of snow in the past few days. It was so nice to see the world around us turn white. Carlo even moreso than myself was just beside himself... He couldn't get enough of seeing the snowflakes softly falling to the ground. Above all we are still looking for an apartment. The search continues and of course it doesn't help that Carlo is busier than ever at work. He will have a huge week of traveling in February. I have an appointment to view a place on Wedenesday that sounds really promising.. We'll see... It is tough some days to stay focused and positive, yet mostly we can help each other get through it. The moment we will have signed the contract on an apartment we can look ahead towards other things and feel as we have truly "arrived" in Munich.

Today we walked to the nearby Olympic Park and enjoyed a fantastic view of the city from the 180m tall Olympic tower. WOW! Carlo and I felt a bit dizzy being so high up and after a good view and orientation of where we want to live and where we've already been, me made a quick decent with the friendly elevator attendant. At 14ft per second the elevator was a true marvel of modern technology. And we were glad that all that technology performed as expected. :-) On our way to the park we fed the local ducks, geese and other water fowl at the numerous lakes. I could even touch the gray geese, who loved the left over bread from breakfast I had stuffed in my purse. Even two swans made their way over the ice to take a bite... The numerous joggers passing us seemed much more graceful than the swans lumbering across the ice.
The Olympic park also houses Munich's Aquarium called "Sea Life" which houses many local but also far away fish such as sharks and rays. One of the coolest things we saw were unborn baby dogfish, a form of shark, moving inside their eggs. Two of them had already hatched, others were clearly ready to leave the cocoon of their hard shell. After a truly wonderful underwater world journey through tunnels and shipwrecks we braved the cold wind to treck all the way home through the Olympic Park. We were rewarded by a fireball-like sunset that was truly spectacular! The wind must have blown all the lingering clouds away as we could see the outline of the Alps clearly against the crimson sky.

Now we are back home and warming up with a cup of steaming hot tea...ahhh!
Hope you are all well, wherever you are.
Greetings to all!

A friend to stay over..

My friend Ina from Stuttgart stayed with us on Friday night, which was a really nice change of pace. We had a fun time at an Italian wine bar and decided to drive to the center the next day to see the city during the big snow. It was so old-world like! Big snowflakes falling all over the old historic buildings, people walking and crowding into bars and coffee houses. We met a couple of her friends for a cup of coffe at the San Francisco Coffee bar...which is one of the few smoke-free coffee bars in Munich. (Next to Starbucks of course!) Many young parents love these places as they provide a healthy stop-over for the entire family. Toddlers included. It was lovely feeling like one of the locals...which we are now.
